Curious characters born from code
ACMI, Melbourne, Australia
2024

Beings is the Australian premiere of our new solo exhibition.

Projected larger than life, our procession of fantastic beings hypnotically morphs between textures like kaleidoscopic fur, molten lava, water molecules, and more. Once you’ve met the colourful cast of characters, you can jump, dance and play to bring the artworks to life. The more you move, the stranger and more excited its response becomes. Created from an unending algorithm, some of the artworks in Beings are generative and evolve in real-time, so that no two visits are the same.

Playfully subverting technologies developed for Hollywood studios and videogame makers, Beings brings together 12 of our eye-popping artworks and installations, including the premiere of two new interactive works.

For close to two decades, we have experimented with emerging technologies to create experiences that mesmerise and enchant audiences. Fascinated with creating ‘soulful technology’, our work explores movement, form and colour to create a world of friendly, hyperreal beings. But beneath the high-end visual effects, our creative process begins with simple hand-drawn sketches. Displayed alongside the artworks for the first time, these drawings reveal the thinking and traditional craft behind the cutting-edge technology.

ACMI is Australia’s national museum of screen culture, located in Fed Square, Melbourne.

Beings exhibition dates: 22 May–29 September 2024.
