Filmed across the diverse landscapes of Seoul National University’s campus, Giant Steps invites viewers to explore both hidden and familiar spaces through an altered reality.
Towering, vibrantly coloured figures move through their daily routines – walking, studying, resting – blurring the line between the mundane and the extraordinary. Their exaggerated presence creates a playful tension, challenging our perception of what is real and what is an illusion. Are these beings part of our world, or are they augmented visions?
The soundtrack, composed of rich melodic textures woven into intricate polyrhythms, mirrors the rhythmic, oversized steps of these figures, reinforcing a sense of movement, wonder, and transformation. The title Giant Steps not only reflects their surreal presence but also symbolises the ambitious strides of academic and personal progress.
Through this work, we invite the audience to reconsider their surroundings, question perception, and embrace the possibility of the extraordinary within the everyday.
Seoul National University commissioned us to create this video artwork for its library’s new immersive media space. To launch this space is a group exhibition called SNU COMMONS Library, curated by Jiyoon Lee, founder of Suum Project.
