Presence is a series of large-scale motion-captured video art pieces, creating dancing abstract forms with a human presence. A collaboration with choreographer Benjamin Millepied and the LA Dance Project, the moving image artwork continues our exploration into the essence of choreography, movement and the human form.

Commissioned by Media Space at the Science Museum London for their inaugural exhibition, Presence turns the screen into a stage and the body into an abstracted sculpture. Experimenting with various materials and forms, the life-sized moving sculptures in these motion-captured video art works cycle through a randomised collection of “costumes” that range from colourful light trails to crystalline formations, with only their movement revealing the human presence within.

It can be difficult to describe digital artworks, because they often need to be seen to be understood. But Matt Pyke hopes that when people do see the newest, extraordinary installation by his design collective, Universal Everything, they will feel ‘the sensation of witnessing a new form of life, never felt before’. And the brilliant thing is, they probably will. – Henrietta Thompson, Wallpaper
